Fourth Grade

Fourth grade artists studied PATTERN and TEXTURE by creating these leaf pictures (SOL 4.5).  They made their own stencil out of card-stock, then traced it to make a repeating pattern on their paper. Then, they used pastels to fill in the leaves with color and pattern.

This week, fourth graders studied works featuring CUBISM by Picasso as well as the heart paintings series by artist Jim Dine (SOL 4.6).  Students combined the styles of these two artists to create mixed media cubist hearts. They drew a heart with Sharpie or black oil pastel and then added LINES with a ruler. Artists picked their medium of choice; to color their work they could use paint, oil pastels, markers, colored pencils, paper, etc. (or a combination).

Focusing on the big Art idea of UNITY, fourth grade artists created "winter bird" pictures (SOL 4.8).  They painted details on white paper and cut them out to make trees.  Then, artists used all types of paper to create a bird for their pictures. Lastly, they glued everything on their paper and added white paint for snow to create a unified work of art.

Students participated in the Delegate Landes' Art Contest this week! Artists could choose their medium and subject for their work of art.   Students had a few guidelines, such as paper size, but they had a lot of creative freedom.  One piece will be chosen from Crozet Elementary to be displayed in the General Assembly building in January & February 2017.

4th and 5th graders prepared to make props, backdrops, and costumes for their musical performance. In small groups, they BRAINSTORMED, sketched, and wrote a description of their ideas and the materials they would need (SOL 4.1, 5.1).  Then, they shared out to the class and collectively decided which ideas to execute. The next week, artists CREATED what they planned the previous week.

Fourth grade artists used "Zentangle" patterns as an inspiration for this project. Students traced a quarter circle stencil in the corner of their paper to create the center of the flower.  Then, they drew petals and added repeating PATTERNS to the entire flower (SOL 4.5).  Finally, they added background color using paint, oil pastels, or markers. (Pictured are 4 separate pieces of student art arranged together to form a whole flower.)

Students planned and created artwork for the upcoming fundraiser, Original Works. Artists could pick the subject and the medium of their choosing. Students and parents will have the option of ordering items with the artwork on it this Spring.

Fourth Grade artists learned about the big Art ideas of SHADES & TINTS (SOL 4.5).  They traced overlapping shapes with black/white oil pastel, then picked one color of paint to start.  Students added black and white to their chosen color of paint to create the shades/tints, then filled in portions of their stenciled shapes.

Students learned about the Art style of SURREALISM in preparation for their next project.  We looked at examples of surrealist artwork and recognized that they combine imaginary and realistic components into one cohesive piece of art (SOL 4.3).  We used hot air balloons as our inspiration for this project.  Students  drew their own hot balloons, then cut them out and combined them with magazine pictures for their background.

Weeks of April 3rd & April 10th: Fourth grade artists worked together to create a COLLABORATIVE work of art (SOL 4.3).  Students chose their own small groups and had to agree on the subject for their picture.  Then, they taped several pieces of paper together to create one large canvas for their original collaborative art
